When we opened the box we couldn’t believe what we saw! The shade looked plastic and like the pieces were glued together. I quickly looked on the Amazon description and it does say it is leaded glass. So we took it out of the box and it is heavy like glass, but the glass is such poor quality that it looks very much like plastic. As anyone who has worked with or is familiar with leaded glass knows, copper foil is wrapped around each piece of glass and then the two are fused together with lead melted over the copper. There is an art to doing this well.
This lamp is not made that way. They claim the glass pieces are copper foiled and leaded. I have made simple leaded glass items so I know the process and I just don’t see how this could possibly be copper foil and lead. It looks more like the glass is wrapped in blackened tin and glued. And it would be a stretch to call this art glass.
It is sturdy though. The pieces assemble rather easily. It has a heavy base, maybe concrete but it is small. So the lamp is top heavy.
That said, it is a classy looking design. It’s sturdy. We like the soft light in the pole and use it as a night light in the room. It creates the ambiance we wanted when we ordered it. It is just the quality of the glass and the leading job is questionable. We have decided to keep it. We just feel it is about double the price it should be.
